Last Friday a team from Journey was at Bonsack Elementary School.  They served popcorn and cotton candy simply to show that our church cares for our community.  Students and staff alike were thrilled!  While standing in line, one student said:  “This is awesome!”  Then another student said:  “This is the best day of my life!”  (Isn’t that great!)

One student with intellectual disabilities was so excited to watch the popcorn pop.  He’d read a story about popping popcorn and was thrilled to actually get to see it happen.  A child on the autism spectrum whose favorite color is blue became animated and filled with delight when he saw blue cotton candy and wanted to get some (which, of course, our volunteers made sure happened!)

Our team served over 400 students and faculty.  It was an excited place as the kids could barely contain themselves until they received their treats.  Again and again students and teachers expressed their gratefulness for how much Journey cares, saying: “Thank you.”  “Thank you.”  (#JourneyCares)

I was talking to someone who recently started attending Journey.  He said he was amazed that our church reaches out in so many ways in our community; he was genuinely surprised.  The consultant with whom our Future Planning Team is working also has expressed appreciation for the multiple ways Journey serves our community.

This coming Friday another team from Journey will be taking our church’s outreach trailer to the Relay For Life Event in Vinton to serve hundreds more people, by serving popcorn and cotton candy and providing our two bouncy houses for children to play in (all this after having loaned our trailer out for another church to use over the weekend.)

When we serve our community, we’re being God’s light in the world, shining forth the light of Jesus.  “Here’s another way to put it:  You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.  God is not a secret to be kept.  We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.  If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?  I’m putting you on a light stand.  Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!  Keep open house; be generous with your lives.  By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:14-16 (MSG)
