You Don't Have to Please Everyone

July 12, 2020

Do you tend to take criticism personally?  Do you have a significant fear of rejection?  Do you find it hard to express your true feelings?  Do you have a difficult time saying “no”?  Have you compromised your values or beliefs in order to please someone?  Do you think God wants a different life for you than that?

  • your love awakens me

    There were walls between us

    By the Cross You came

    And broke them down

    You broke them down

    There were chains around us

    By Your grace

    We are no longer bound

    No longer bound

You called me out of the grave

You called me into the light

    You called my name

And then my heart came alive!

    Your love is greater!

    Your love is stronger!

    Your love awakens, awakens

    Awakens me!

    Repeat

    Feel the darkness shaking

    All the dead are coming

Back to life, back to life

    Hear the song awaken

    All creation singing

    “We’re alive, cause You’re alive!”

You called me out of the grave

You called me into the light

    You called my name

And then my heart came alive!

    Your love is greater!

    Your love is stronger!

    Your love awakens, awakens

    Awakens me!

    Repeat

And what a love we found!

    Death can’t hold us down!

    We shout it out

    “We’re alive, cause You’re alive!”

    Repeat 2x

    Your love is greater!

    Your love is stronger!

    Your love awakens, awakens

    Awakens me!

    Repeat 3x

  • King of my heart

Let the King of my heart

Be the mountain where I run

    The fountain I drink from

    Oh, He is my song

Let the King of my heart

Be the shadow where I hide

    The ransom for my life

    Oh, He is my song

You are good, You’re good, O-oh

    Repeat 3x

Let the King of my heart

Be the wind inside my sails

    The anchor in the waves

    Oh, He is my song

Let the King of my heart

Be the fire inside my veins

    The echo of my days

    Oh, He is my song

Let the King of my heart

Be the wind inside my sails

    The anchor in the waves

    Oh, He is my song

Let the King of my heart

Be the fire inside my veins

    The echo of my days

    Oh, He is my song

You are good, You’re good, O-oh

    Repeat 3x

    You're never gonna let

You’re never gonna let me down

    Repeat 5x

You are good, You’re good, O-oh

    Repeat 3x

    You're never gonna let

You’re never gonna let me down

    Repeat 3x

You are good, You’re good, O-oh

You are good, You’re good, O-oh

  • Do It Again

    Walking around these walls

I thought by now they’d fall

But You have never failed me yet

    Waiting for change to come

    Knowing the battle’s won

For You have never failed me yet

    Your promise still stands

    Great is Your faithfulness

    Faithfulness

    I’m still in Your hands

    This is my confidence

    You’ve never failed me yet

I know the night won’t last

Your word will come to pass

My heart will sing Your praise again

    Jesus, You’re still enough

    Keep me within Your love

My heart will sing Your praise again

    Your promise still stands

    Great is Your faithfulness

    Faithfulness

    I’m still in Your hands

    This is my confidence

    You’ve never failed

    Your promise still stands

    Great is Your faithfulness

    Faithfulness

    I’m still in Your hands

    This is my confidence

    You’ve never failed me yet

    I’ve seen You move

    You move the mountains

    And I believe

I’ll see You do it again

    You made a way

    Where there was no way

    And I believe

I’ll see You do it again

    I’ve seen You move

    You move the mountains

    And I believe

I’ll see You do it again

    You made a way

    Where there was no way

    And I believe

I’ll see You do it again

    I’ve seen You move

    You move the mountains

    And I believe

I’ll see You do it again

    You made a way

    Where there was no way

    And I believe

I’ll see You do it again

I’ll see You do it again

    Your promise still stands

    Great is Your faithfulness

    Faithfulness

    I’m still in Your hands

    This is my confidence

    You’ve never failed

    Your promise still stands

    Great is Your faithfulness

    Faithfulness

    I’m still in Your hands

    This is my confidence

    You’ve never failed me yet

    You’ve never failed me yet

    I never will forget

    You’ve never failed me yet

    I never will forget

You Don't Have to Please Everyone

Do you think I am trying to make people accept me?  No, God is the One I am trying to please.  Am I trying to please people?  If I still wanted to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.  Galatians 1:10 (NCV)

Characteristics of people pleasers . . .

Tend to take criticism personally

Have an extraordinary fear of rejection

Find it hard to express their true feelings

Have a difficult time saying “No”

Even then, many of the leaders put their faith in Jesus, but they did not tell anyone about it.  The Pharisees had already given orders for the people not to have anything to do with anyone who had faith in Jesus.  And besides, the leaders liked praise from others more than they liked praise from God.  John 12:42-43 (CEV)

People pleasing can become a form of idolatry.

It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.  Proverbs 29:25 (GNT)

People pleasing traps . . .

Compromising

Over-committing

God was pleased to trust us with his message.  We didn’t speak to please people, but to please God who knows our motives.  We were not trying to get you or anyone else to praise us.  1 Thessalonians 2:4, 6 (CEV)

Seeking to please God is the best antidote to the disease of people pleasing.

Being normal is rarely being Godly.

Talk About It

1.  Who are some people you most try to please?  What do you think of that?

2.  To what degree do you think you are a people pleaser?  How do you think you came to be that way?

3.  In what ways do you agree or disagree with the statement: “I can’t please everyone”?

4.  How would you say at times you tend to take criticism personally?

5.  How much of a fear of rejection would you say you have?  What do you think of that?

6.  How hard would you say it is for you to express your true feelings?  What do you think of that?

7.  How difficult would you say it is for you to say “no” to people?

8.  When is a time that you compromised your values or beliefs in order to please someone or to not be rejected by someone?

9.  When is a time that you over-committed yourself in order to please someone?

11.  What do you think of the idea that being normal is rarely being Godly in our world?

12.  How do you think God might help you overcome excessive people pleasing?
